Art B takes the students on a journey through the development of classical orchestral music from the Baroque Period to the beginning of the 20th century. The lives and times of some of the greatest composers are explored as well as the art of conducting and the complexities of the orchestra. Students will learn to appreciate classical music and be able to identify it in their everyday lives (church, movie soundtracks, and even cartoons).
During this stage in education, basic study skills should be further developed. To facilitate this, students are guided through the process of 5-paragraph essay writing as they research various composers. A timeline is kept depicting each composer and his place of birth is plotted on a map of Europe. The students keep a notebook with their findings, vocabulary words, and listening sheets. They are encouraged to maintain their information in a neat and organized fashion.
